KTE Spirit Night
Spirit Night at Chick Fil A is Monday, December 3rd from 5:30 – 8:30pm. Come out to show your KTE pride. Teachers will be there reading stories to the kids. Be sure to tell the cashier you are with KTE for us to get credit.

Gift Basket Donations
PTA is currently collecting donations for themed gift baskets that will be raffled off at our annual Fall Festival on November 3rd. Each grade level has their own basket theme. Please consider sending in donations with your child to their classroom or drop off donations in the front office. Thank you in advance for your participation! These are the themes for each grade level. Donations will be collected from Oct. 5-26th!
- Pre-K and Kindergarten – “Quiet Time” -Books, books on tape, building materials such as Legos, blocks, etc writing/drawing materials, puzzles, board games, cards, computer games, CDs, gift certificates to book, music and toy stores
- First Grade – “Imagination” -Puppets, dress-up, magic kits, music, science kits such as volcano kits, etc., magnifying glass, books on space and science, trucks/vehicles, gift certificates to music and toy stores
- Second Grade – “Gardening and Nature” -Children’s gardening gloves, Children’s gardening tools, Children’s wheelbarrows, Bulbs for children, Flower and vegetable seeds, watering cans and buckets, rain boots, paint the pot kits, bug catchers, nature books, gift certificates to nurseries or gardening stores
- Third Grade – “Arts and Crafts”- Paints, crayons and markers, construction paper, glue, beads, do-it-yourself crafts, play-dough/modeling clay, jewelry making kits, model airplanes/cars, gift certificates to Plaster Play and other craft stores
- Fourth Grade – “Summer Fun” -Beach toys such as sand buckets, frisbees, beach balls, beach chairs, sun block, goggles, water toys such as blow-up rafts, snorkeling equipment, slip-n-slide, etc., 4th of July items, outdoor games, gift certificates to ice cream stores and toy stores
- Fifth Grade – “Sports and Games”- Balls such as soccer, football, etc., jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, baseball equipment, hockey and skating equipment, outdoor games, tickets to sporting events, gift certificates to sporting good stores
KTE Fall Festival is Saturday, November 3rd from 2-5pm!
The date is set for our annual fall festival so please mark your calendars and plan on joining us for food, fun, hayrides, games, bounce houses and the dunking booth!

Ø BoxTops- Be on the lookout for Box Tops on many products that you buy in the grocery and office supply stores.
Ø Campbell’s “Labels for Education”- These can be found on many products including soup, Goldfish crackers, breads, Pop Secret popcorn, Prego sauce, Danimals yogurt products and more.
Ø Tyson Project A+ Labels- The entire strip of the package needs to be cut out, not just the A+ graphic.
Points earned by collecting labels and BoxTops are redeemed for classroom and resource items. Please turn these items in by October 19th.

Welcome Back for the 2012-2013 School Year at KTE!
PTA is hard at work getting ready for another successful year at Kernan Trail and we look forward to your support as PTA supports our teachers and students.
A few reminders and notes:
- Orientation is Friday, August 17th at 10am. Please be aware that Kernan Middle is holding their Orientation at 9am the same day. Be patient with any traffic delays.
- Have you seen the new school traffic lights? They will definitely be helpful to the bike riders and walkers crossing Kernan Blvd.
- PTA will be outside the school Friday morning selling t-shirts and memberships. T-shirts are sold for $7 on Orientation Day only so be sure to get one! Memberships are $6 and can be purchased by multiple family members individually to help support the school.

KTE Beautification Day, May 12
From 9am to Noon on May 12th, we are looking for volunteers to come out and help with some landscaping improvements for our school's front entrance. Bring your gardening gloves and tools to help with spreading mulch, pulling weeds and trimming bushes and trees. Your students are welcome to help as well.
Annual Kernan Talent Extravaganza
Be on the lookout for information coming home about our 2nd annual Kernan Trail Talent Extravaganza and Family Night scheduled for June 1. There will be a catered dinner, talent show and raffle. Tickets go on sale in May. Students will audition Saturday, May 12th to be considered for the show.
2011-2012 Yearbook
Order forms have been sent home to pre-order your student's yearbook for $20. After May 11th, the cost for purchasing a yearbook will be $25.
Field Days
Students from the entire school participate in events on school grounds throughout the day focusing on fun and fitness. Come out and support your students during these events or volunteer to help run the events by contacting Marissa Haynes at 904-240-0267 or marissahaynes@comcast.net.

Book Fair
The end of year Book Fair is scheduled for May 14-18th. The books are 2 for the price of 1! Students who continue to read over the summer are positioned for success when the 2012-2013 school year begins!

Kernan Trail Elementary’s First Annual Fun Run
The Boosterthon Fun Run program is a healthy alternative to traditional product sales that raises much-needed funds for our school and many others across America. The nine-day Boosterthon program also promotes three specific values during the fun-filled program: Fitness, Leadership, and Character.
This year’s character theme is “EPIC Adventure,” and it’s all about Teamwork! Our students will be building character by learning the four secrets of good teams: Encourage, Play, Invite and Celebrate! The event will kick off with a 30-minute school-wide Pep Rally on March 26th and conclude on April 4th with the Boosterthon Fun Run event. Students get pledges towards the number of laps they will run at the Boosterthon Fun Run. Every student participates in the Fun Run, regardless of pledges raised, and receives a “Boosterthon All-Star” t-shirt. Enter your pledges at funrun.com. Each student has his/her own safe and secure Boosterthon Fun Run webpage to log in pledges and watch character videos. Sponsors can pay their pledges online! All pledges are tax-deductible! Proceeds will be used to add shade to our playground.

Your Feedback Made a Difference!
The State Board of Education voted last week on the 7 changes that affect elementary school. A recap of the vote is:
- Change 1: More rigorous Level 3 cut scores - Approved
- Change 2: Implement a Reading Threshold – 25% Approved to be implemented starting next year
- Change 3: Include SWD(Students with disabilities) and ELL (Engligh Language Learners) students in proficiency calculations – Postponed for further discussion next month
- Change 4: Reduce cell size requirement to 10 – Continued Discussion
- Change 5: Modify the Learning Gains calculation for Level 1 and 2 students - Approved
- Add weight for students who move to Level 4 or 5 - Approved
- Remove Level 3 students from Lowest 25% - Approved
Thanks to all that submitted written and/or electronic surveys. A collaborated effort by all State of Florida citizens did make a difference. Continue to send your comments on change 3 to the State Board members!
